When we are going to place a conventional crown on a patient’s tooth that has been damaged or that has been treated with a root canal, we schedule two visits for this procedure. On the first visit, we prepare the tooth for the crown. This preparation consists of shaping the tooth so a crown can be fit over it.
We then take a mold of the prepared tooth and the teeth around it. We send this mold to our trusted dental lab. In a week or two, the crown comes back to our office and we schedule our patient for another visit.
We first try on the crown to ensure it is a perfect fit, making any adjustments needed until it fits just right. The crown is then cemented firmly into place and our patient now has a protected and strengthened tooth.
Care of a Crowned Tooth
A crowned tooth only needs to be cared for like your natural teeth. Brushing twice a day and flossing once each day plus seeing us for regular cleanings, examinations and x-rays will keep your crown in good condition.
