TMD/TMJ in Ballwin, MO

TMD refers to “temporomandibular disorder” or a problem with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) located right in front of the ear. It is this joint that allows the lower jaw to open and close. Clenching one's jaw repeatedly or grinding one’s teeth places unusual stresses on this joint and eventually can result in inflammation and joint damage.
We can perform an examination of the function of this joint to determine if there is a disorder that needs to be treated. If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, an examination should be done to check for TMD:
  • Sore or tight muscles in the jaw or neck
  • Headaches
  • Popping or clicking when the joint moves
  • Inability to open or close the jaw
  • Pain during chewing

We can help by diagnosing the cause of these symptoms and providing corrective treatment. Our treatment may consist of supplying our patient with an appliance to be worn in the mouth at night to prevent damage from grinding or clenching. It may also be necessary to correct the way the upper and lower jaws come together.
