This week wraps up the Dental Implant Awareness Month. A month in which dentists across the nation and their patients celebrate the amazing new smiles dental implants have given them. The purpose of this awareness month is to bring to light how implants are changing smiles and changing lives. But the celebration of new smiles doesn’t stop at the end of September. Our Ballwin dentist is forever creating new smiles. For some patients a new smile is in the form of bridgework, for others, dentures. Yet, for the most natural looking smile, dental implants are ideal.
Are dental implants better than dentures?
Many factors go into determining whether or not you are a good candidate for a dental implant. Is your bone strong enough to hold the fixture? Do you practice good oral hygiene? Are you a smoker? Can you undergo a surgical procedure? These are common questions or situations that need to be addressed before proceeding. At your initial consultation, our Ballwin dentist will review your oral history and X-Rays to determine if the synthetic root, or fixture, will successfully be able to do its job.
Dentures, on the other hand, don’t always need a post implanted to stabilize the apparatus. Dentures replace a few teeth or all. They are removable for cleaning purposes, but don’t always provide a natural looking smile. Implants resemble the natural tooth and fit and feel like your regular teeth, as well.
Do I clean my implant differently?
The great thing about dental implants is that you treat them just as you would your normal teeth. Brush two times a day and floss every day. Make sure you follow our Ballwin dentist hygiene directions and show up for your 6-month appointments. These dental exams allow us to check the implant for issues or to make adjustments to the crown if necessary.
How long do implants last?
Implants last much longer than other dental procedures. With proper care, an implant can last 30 years or more. The strong materials that make up the implant outlast many other solutions. Additionally, the bone in which the fixture is implanted into, or fused, is actually stimulated by the procedure, thus resulting in bone growth.
Hiding your smile because you are ashamed of it, or because you aren’t happy with the way it looks doesn’t have to be the norm.
